PMP Preparation & Resources

Writer: Vinod KumarVinod Kumar

With Projects becoming more obviously important and Project manager roles are one of the most aspiring positions today

I am glad to know a lot of my colleagues and connections are interested in taking the PMP Exam.

Hence I thought of writing a quick overview and sharing some of resources I studied while preparing for my PMP Exam.

If you are planning to take the PMP exam, I strongly recommend to go through the below blog on how to Register for PMP Exam.

"Once again, you don't need to study or read all of the resources I have shared, but the more questions you practice you are better prepared for the exam."

While preparing for my PMP exam in 2017, I started with PM Prepcast by Cornelius Fichtner, PMP Exam Prep and PMP Training Online the training recordings I received were quite detailed and clear. I was very impressed for his passion towards PMP overall and especially his style of training along with the consistent free updates I used to receive.

Simultaneously, based on the recommendation from one of my friend I started to study the Rita Mulcahy PMP Exam Prep 9th edition. One of the best decision I made (I strongly suggest you to read the latest book for your PMP exam preparations- I purchased online and printed it due to my budget constraints)

I am not a book worm nor I like to study continuously, though I was well connected with the book and the plain English was quite easy for me to understand.

This book is much simpler than the PMBOK Guide provided by the PMI. Once you study this book it will give you a very good understanding on what is PMP and you can take the practice tests online. (this doesn't mean don't read the PMBOK guide - I just quickly brushed it up once)

Please read the below article on the PMP Exam eligibility- https://edward-designer.com/web/pmp/

PMP Resources

There are tons of resources available online and below are some I used to prepare for the exam. (marked as H*) are the ones I focused regularly, rest I just briefly reviewed whenever I had time on my phone.

Do check if your company can arrange bootcamps, it will be way easier to practice rather studying by yourselves which can reduce your overall study time. (in my case I had to self study as I didn't have budget from my organization and trainings in the country where I was located was quite pricy due to the special language requirements)

PMP® Exam Updates

Do monitor the changes towards the PMP Exam and keep a close watch before buying any new books or reviewing the courses online.

You can refer to the PMP exam updates here: PMP Exam Updates (pmi.org)

The PMP exam has evolved to meet today’s demands of the profession, organizations and you. It focuses on three domains you need to gain a competitive edge and prove you work smarter:

  1. PEOPLE – emphasizing the soft skills you need to effectively lead a project team in today's changing environment

  2. PROCESS – reinforcing the technical aspects of successfully managing projects

  3. BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT – highlighting the connection between projects and organizational strategy

Content that spans the value delivery spectrum, including predictive, agile and hybrid approaches, will be included across the three exam domains.

The exam is comprised of:

  • 180 questions (the previous exam was 200), but the same number of questions will be scored

  • 230 minutes to complete the exam

  • One additional break for a total of two 10-minute breaks for computer-based tests. No scheduled breaks for paper-based exams.

  • Questions will be a combination of multiple-choice, multiple responses, matching, hotspot and limited fill-in-the-blank.

You don't need to study or read all of the below resources but the more questions you practice you are better prepared for the exam.
